I spent the day in and out of the detention room and the head teacher’s office, so really not an unusual day for me, what did I do wrong this time? Have a modern perspective, that’s all, I simply disagreed with what a teacher was saying. It was during religious studies, and being in a catholic school, with catholic teachers teaching us the catholic way of love and marriage with me being a queer, atheist, student in the class it wasn’t going to exactly end well was it? I kept my mouth shut until he went onto marriage and proudly declared “Marriage is for a man and woman. The purpose of marriage is to reproduce and to raise your children in the catholic way of life. Anything else is disgusting and immoral.” Well, I wasn’t having that. Before I even knew what I was doing I could hear the words ‘Well that’s bullshit!’ leave my mouth (I will admit I am quite proud of myself) naturally the whole class stopped silent and Mr Samson stood at the front in shock, to be fair I do not know why he looked quite so shocked it isn’t like this wasn’t a regular occurrence. I probably should have stopped there, but I do like to push the limits and I was going to tell him exactly what I thought of his religious morals, and I wasn’t going to beat around the bush. So, I started my rant, I told him his idea of marriage was outdated, ancient to be honest, why should some made-up man in the sky tell who I can marry? I won’t go into full detail but I did include words like ‘homophobic’, ‘moron’ and various explicit words… it is safe to say he did not accept my opinion too kindly, you could see his nostrils flare and his face go bright red, you could tell he was holding back, trying to remember the numerous anger management techniques he had been taught over the years, well that was until I finished off with a proud and bold statement of “Who are you and your organization to tell me I cannot marry my girlfriend?”.
I was swiftly sent out, with his declaration that he would not have someone so vile in his class.
I was still in detention for an hour after school, after my parents arrived at the school to collect me we sat in the head’s office, after a lengthy lecture, he told my parents he knew the perfect place for… the ideal place to “straighten” me out.
